For many years, the poppy stood alone on a day of remembrance. Convincing the world it was invincible. A triumphant defeat against a murderous dictator put the poppy front and center. The world was grateful for the combined efforts of men and women who sacrificed their lives and souls to gain freedom from an oppressor. The world stands in silence, stilling themselves so they can hear the voices of the past. A moment for us to hear what they are saying about the fight, the losses, and the victory.

The Christmas tree stands alone as a symbol of rebirth. A day to recognize the birth of a savior. Through the savior a spiritual rebirth is obtained. We can exist in a new light that heals broken or sick souls. What a marvelous way to bring peace and harmony into this world. A day of celebration and dedication. We decorate the Christmas tree with trinkets and lights to create something beautiful. On top of the tree is an angel or a star to help guide the spirit of Christmas into our home.

Somewhere in time a clash broke out between Christmas decorations appearing before the day reserved for the poppy. Those that stand in silence voice their opinion contradicting the existence of such an idea on or before Remembrance Day. To put up Christmas decorations is a dishonor and a disgrace to the fallen and those who survived the war. How dare you insult such people. Without their sacrifices you would not have Christmas at all. Such a disregard!

Those that appeal to the spirit of Christmas disagree, for to be able to act free of an oppressor is exactly why the war was fought. How is honor gained if you dictate conditions? As you celebrate the poppy do you become a dictator yourself? Is that not the ultimate insult to such sacrifices?

And so the battle continues into the darkness of a commercial world, hung up on ideas rather than actions. I shall not speak on behalf of those that sacrificed their lives as so I can live in a free country. Their actions speak louder than mine. I shall wear the poppy in an honorable silence, in a state of mind that cannot be oppressed or dictated to. If you ascribe to the same freedom, then you have the gift of spiritual well-being and its implications in your daily life.
